Hekate is an ancient goddess who can be traced all the way back to the times of ancient Anatolia, tracking her history through Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Europe and then into modern day. She has a very long history. She is ancient and wise, but she is not old.

She is said to be a Titan, Gaia being her great grandmother and Uranus being her great grandfather, giving her ties to the earth and sky.

Gaia, being mother earth, holds the realm of the dead, this gives Hekate a lineage rite to the dead and the underworld. Through Uranus, she has direct access to the sky and the heavens.

Phoebe is said to be her maternal grandmother giving her the association with oracles and prophecies, as well as her paternal grandmother Eurybia; giving her mastery over the sea and all natural forces wind and constellations.

With these associations and lineages, she is deemed a goddess over earth, sea, and sky.  1

There are many mythologies associated with her, some say she is the daughter of Asteria and Perses, others say she is a direct descendant of Gaia, Ouronos, and Okeanos (Earth, Sky, and Sea). Hekate has been equated to the Platonic Cosmic Soul, which has come down through her lineage of sky and earth- she is half heavens and half earth. Able to travel through time, seeing three different ways at one time, past, present, and future. She dwells in the liminal spaces, the in-between places, she is a goddess of transition, a light in darkness, a guide through the underworld and shadow places of ourselves.   1

Hekate is the bridge between the old and new, because of her age and diverse origins, she has a varied legacy. Some say she is good, others say she is bad, but just like humanity, she can be both at different times for different people. She is a guide, the rebellious child, the distant but caring mother, the strange auntie, the wise but slightly cranky older sister, the conspirator cousin.

She will guide you but will not carry you, you have to walk the path yourself.            1

Altars

Hekataion- a home altar, usually set up outside the front door or the entrance of a space- used to instill Hekate’s protection over the home and those who reside within.

Chronic- (of the earth) a low earth altar, used for death and underworld deities.

Ouranian- (of the heavens) most common altar, sits higher up and is used for sky and heaven deities.     1

When working with Hekate, it is appropriate to use all types of these altars because she is a goddess of earth, sea, and sky.

Offerings

Deiphon: Hekate”s Supper, is a meal offering left at a three way crossroads on the night of the new moon

Kykeon: a sacred drink made of barley, pennyroyal (baneful), and Water- it is said to induce a hallucinogenic trance.

Red Meal: used by traditional and hedge witches; consist of red wine and dark bread

Other offerings: garlic, onions, eggs, dark red wine, coffee, dark chocolate, mushrooms, olive oil, honey, sacred herbs, poetry, cauldrons, keys, pomegranate.        1

Ritual

To get to know Hekate - Taken from Courtney Weber’s book Hekate: Goddess of Witches

(ritual modified)

Need:

3 candles- black, white, and silver, or a combination.

       An image of Hekate

       A bulb of garlic

       A libation

On your altar or on a temporary one , add candles, libation, offering, and image.

Light candles and say this prayer while focusing on the intention of being introduced to Hekate.

“Lady of the crossroads, the key keeper, the moon lady. I seek to know you, I seek to hear you.

I am here, I am here, I am here.

Hekate Triformus, be with me now.”

Sit in silence and meditate on your libation for a bit. Thank Hekate and ground yourself. Blow out candles.

Either leave the libation and offering on the altar or bury them together somewhere, or at a three-way crossroads.

This same prayer can be said over a meal intended to be left at a three-way crossroads.

“Sometimes, people expect a significant experience, thinking the goddess' words must be loud and profound. This can happen but more often, the work is quiet, and the god’s voices are muted. Ultimately, they come through dreams, moments of synchronicity, or a personal revelation or understanding.” Courtney Weber, Hekate: Goddess of Witches.      2
