The
White Buffalo Woman
The history of the White Buffalo Woman,
known to be from the Lakota Region, also known as Ptesan-
Wi, “The White Buffalo Calf Woman”, goes back to the time of the
Ancestors, the era about 475-570 years ago, approx. 1454 AD, and has spanned 19
generations.
The Lakota Religion is traditional
Native American, practiced by people based in North and South Dakota. Whilst White
Buffalo Calf Woman does not have any seasons dedicated or associated with her
directly, aspects of her and her story have all of the elements in it. When she
came to the Lakota people, her thought was on life, helping humanity to be more
in tune with the peace and harmony in their lives, and she was very focused on
life and encouraged the Lakota people on how to better their lives.
The prophecy of the White Buffalo Woman
is about respecting all others, to take care of the earth, but coming together
to do so. The myth of The White Buffalo Woman is respected all throughout many
different Natives Americans Tribes, such as Sioux, Cherokee, Comanche and
Navajo; each of these Tribes has a slight variation on the Myth, which has been
passed down through each generation, and so can be open to individual
interpretation.
The winter months meant that there was
not much food so 2 men went out hunting one day. It is said that the Goddess
came to them as a White Buffalo, but then transformed into a beautiful woman.
The first man saw how beautiful she was
and approached her with lust in his eyes and wanted her. The Goddess could see
and sense the man's intentions, and he was killed by a dark cloud that
surrounded him. The other man did not move, sensing sacredness; he showed
respect. He was approached by the Goddess. She told him to go to his people and
wait for her, for she will be there in a few days, and to prepare for her
arrival.
The man does this, and when she arrives,
she brings with her a Sacred bundle; this was a prayer pipe, which later became
known as the peace pipe, and a bunch of sage leaves.

She told them about the 7 rites.
* The Sun Dance is done at the end
of Winter and is to remind people of the importance of being
grateful, asking for prayers for new crops, and to give thanks to their
creator for new beginnings.
The White buffalo Woman spent 4 days
with the people, teaching them when to use the pipe. The Pipe contained Red
Willow Bark also known as Chan- Shasha as Tobacco, which
was to be smoked during and before the 7 Sacred Rites; with this there were
also 7 Ceremonies and prayers, which were conducted by a Tribal Elder or
dedicated Spiritual Leader. The ceremonial pipe is first offered to the “Wakan
Tanka” The Great Spirit, then the Earth, the sky and then the people.
This way of doing things was to signify the hierarchy and importance of
the Great Spirit.
These 7 ways to pray were done through
ceremonies:

For this ceremony special tents or
shelters are built for the specific purpose of conducting these ceremonies.
When they are finished, everything apart from the main pole of the tent is
removed; this is to remind people of the event, the sacrifice made, the visions
shared, stories told and bonds formed.
Herbs that are associated with her are
ones that are used within the sacred bundle. White sage leaf is used
for purification, mental clarity and spiritual awareness. The White
Buffalo Woman carried them around in a fan as part of her sacred bundle.
There are limited foods associated with
The White Buffalo Woman, the ones that are, are used within the Sacred lodge,
and as part of the Seven Sacred Rites, such as, Sage and Cherry Plants- these
are placed around the altar ready for the ceremonies.
Sweet Grass also known as Wacanga - This is put into water, which is then
poured on to people, or onto an Eagle feather to purify someone. It is also
given to honour The White Buffalo Woman.
The White Buffalo Turquoise Stone is
associated with The White Buffalo Woman; it is represented with the Earth
Element, which is also associated with The White buffalo Woman. It also means
peace and adventures.

Before the rites, The White Buffalo
Woman would walk around the lodge four times to signify the morning light of
the sun also called Anpetu-Wi, which
also means the never-ending circle of life.

The items that are associated with the
White Buffalo Calf Woman are closely linked with her personal traits. The
White Buffalo is an animal that the Goddess transformed from and into, hence
why it is one of her sacred animals, but she is also associated with the Hawk
and Eagle; these are symbols of the sky, a place where the goddess resides.
As she was due to leave
she told the village that she would return to restore peace and harmony. As she
was walking away she turned into a Black Buffalo. After
walking a little while she then laid down and came back as a Yellow Buffalo. She
then walked a bit further and came back as a Red Buffalo. And then, finally,
she changed into the White Buffalo Calf; this was the final fulfilment of the
White Buffalo Woman Prophecy. The changing of the colours
represents the colours of the 4 Elements.
