Story of Fortuna
Borrowed from: Patricia Telesco's Gardening with the Goddess (2001, p. 99-101)
While most of us consider Fortuna as 'Lady Luck', she is much more than that to the people who truly seek her. Fortuna presides over all the attributes of luck, fate, destiny, future-telling, oracles, kismet and chance. In ancient Roman times, she blessed gardens with abundance and brought fertility to couples. According to myth, she was Jupiter's nurse, the patroness of matrons and ruler of the bath house. Rulers often kept golden statutes of her nearby to ensure well-being of their reigns.
Honoring Fortuna
Suggestions borrowed from Patricia Telesco's books: Gardening with the Goddess (2001, 9-101)
Your Altar:
The colors most pleasing to Fortuna are gold, silver and green. Think glittery
and sparkly. Candles that are green, gold and silver colored. A cornucopia would
be a perfect finishing touch!

Fortuna is often seen offering
this ‘horn of plenty’ to all of her admirers. I see this as a reminder
to us all that there is plenty good luck to go around and as encouragement to
share of fortune with others!
Your Garden:
Creating a garden to honor Fortuna and call on her to favor you is a great idea!
Plants that are associated with Fortuna are clover, fern, cabbage, violets,
and heather. Any plant that is considered ‘lucky’ would be an ideal
selection. Try designing your garden in the shape of a wheel and in the center
– place an old style boat, the prow or rudder which Fortuna teers carefully
through life’s waters.

Your Clothing:
Patricia Telesco’s books: 365 Goddess (1998, April 11)
Wear any colors that indicate to Fortuna what you need most (green for prosperity and luck, blue for victory, red for success, yellow for communication and creativity and purple for spirituality and leadership qualities.
Other ways to invoke
her:
For a little extra cash, dab your automobile’s, bike’s, motorcycle’s
wheels with almond oil or pineapple juice. This will call on Fortuna’s
help to keep money ‘rolling’ in! Also lightly dad your steering
wheel similarly – this way you can keep a ‘handle’ on personal
finances.
A ritual that I have
started using to gain Fortuna’s guidance in matters of my destiny is written
below. The idea was originally proposed by Patricia Telesco in her book 365
Goddess (1998). She suggested at some gathering of people that each person write
a word of phrase on a slip of paper and drop it in a bowl. And at the end of
the gathering, each person could reach into the bowl and see what Fortuna had
to say. I took her idea one or two steps further and created my own ritual for
seeking Fortuna’s guidance on difficult matters.
On each night of a full moon, I write a few short sentences or phrases on sheets
of paper and put these sentences into a guidance box (my guidance box is decorated
to look like an old treasure chest). Then through out the remaining days of
the month, I pull out a slip of paper when I need guidance. During the dark
moon, I empty the guidance box into my cauldron and burn the remaining pieces
of paper. As the smoke drifts up into the air, I thank Fortuna for her words
of wisdom. By starting anew each full moon, you will always have fresh suggestions
for your quandaries instead of using last year’s answers to this year’s
problem!
For those needing a more involved invocation of Fortuna’s blessings, Here is a good luck spell for you.

-1 tablespoon dried
wormwood
-3 teaspoons ground nutmeg
-1/2 teaspoon powdered
mandrake root
-13 drops of pine oil
-1/4 cup olive oil
Place
ingredients in a jar and stir it clockwise. Let it sit for 13 nights.
Cast a circle and light all candles but one green candle. Anoint that candle
with a few drops of the good luck oil and say:
O
GREAT GIDDESS FORTUNA
LADY OF LUCK
GODDESS OF FORTUNE
MASTER OF FATE
I CONSECRATE THIS CANDLE IN YOUR NAME AND HONOR
Now
light the candle and ask the Goddess to take the form of Fortuna. Use
this invocation:
O
FORTUNA
LADY LUCK
COME TO ME
GODDESS OF FATE GODDESS OF FORTUNE
I CALL UPON THEE
COME TO ME
ENTER MY CIRCLE
BLESS MY CIRCLE AND LIFE WITH YOUR MAGICK TOUGH
BLESS IT WITH LUCK AND FORTUNE
GREAT GODDESS FORTUNA
I INVOKE THEE
Now
take the petition and burn it over the green candle and say:
(this is where the careful attention comes in. Please be very very careful with
this burning part of the ritual! Use caution not to burn yourself or your altar!
Our intent with the ritual is to call for GOOD fortune not the MISFORTUNE of
burning down your sacred space! With that being said…carry on)
BY
FIRE AND HERB
I CALL AND SUMMON THEE
ENTER MY CIRCLE HAIL
MERRY YE MEET
AND WELCOME
Drop
it into a cauldron and let it burn. Now draw a money or fortune rune
on the paper.
Burn it over the candle. Let it burn and put the ashes of the paper and
petition into the jar. Hold the jar in your hands and say:
GREAT
GODDESS FORTUNA
PLEASE BRING GOOD LUCK AND FORTUNE MY WAY. SO MOTE IT BE
May the Goddess Fortuna smile upon you all and may you be blessed with abundance of love, friendship and material comforts! Remember: take all you need, need what you take and if you are blessed with more than you need, offer the rest to another who is in need.
Peace
and Sharing to you all,
Serenity
